AI Fundamentals

Why Teach AI?

Each of these illustrations were created by something called “generative artificial intelligence,” which uses machine learning algorithms to enable computers to create original content including text, audio, images, illustrations, video, and even code. Some of the more well known generative AI models include DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and ChatGPT.

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the way we live and work.

Much like the personal computer, internet, and smartphones, AI impacts—or will impact—nearly every facet of human life. It’s our responsibility as educators to ensure students are ready to harness the incredible potential of this technology while navigating its risks.

Preparing for the Future of Work

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the skills and career pathways that will lead students to a prosperous future in the new digital economy. It is already being used across virtually every sector, and as its capabilities continue to grow, so will its impact on the skills that students will need in order to succeed after they graduate.

Check out some of the ways AI is changing the world of work.

Empowering future consumers and citizens.

Important parts of how we exist in society are being influenced by AI and algorithms—from the news, art, music, videos, and content we consume, to the way companies and governments use our data and personal information to make predictions about how we are. Our healthcare, financial services, entertainment, safety, and interactions with the criminal justice system are all increasingly influenced by AI. As governments and society writ large grapple with the risks posed by algorithmic bias, data privacy, and transparency, it’s more critical than ever to equip students to be savvy digital citizens.

Creating a STEM mindset in all students

Much like the internet, AI will be a powerful tool used in every domain and career that students are interested or curious about, including the Arts, Design, and Humanities—in addition to STEM fields. We have the opportunity to build STEM mindsets in all students by showing them how technology will empower them to pursue their passion, whatever that is. AI education provides core subjects with tangible connections to the real world that can help educators demonstrate the relevance of English, Social Studies, Science, and Math.
